Thermography detects thermal irregularities — areas of unusual heat or vascular asymmetry — in breast tissue. It does not detect or diagnose cancer; these findings are a physiological data point that may be worth discussing with your physician as part of your overall breast health monitoring.
Cool or asymmetric thermal patterns along the spine can sometimes be observed alongside symptoms like chronic fatigue, widespread muscle pain, or joint aches. Thermography doesn't diagnose these conditions, but tracking these patterns over time may offer your physician useful context as part of a broader evaluation.

Skin blood flow is regulated by the sympathetic nervous system, which normally keeps thermal patterns symmetrical from one side of the body to the other. Thermography captures this dermal blood flow pattern with a sensitivity of 0.01°C, translating subtle physiological activity into a visual, side-by-side comparison.
Thermal Asymmetry as a Measurable Data Point
Because healthy tissue on both sides of the body tends to run at very similar temperatures, any meaningful deviation — a "thermal asymmetry" — can be measured and tracked. On its own, this asymmetry doesn't identify a cause. What it provides is a quantifiable, repeatable measurement that can be compared against a person's own baseline scan over time, which is why thermography works best as part of an ongoing monitoring routine rather than a single snapshot.
Vascular Activity & Angiogenesis
Tissue that is inflamed, healing, or undergoing physiological change typically requires an increased blood supply — a process that can involve angiogenesis, the growth of new blood vessels. Because blood carries heat, areas of elevated vascular activity can register as measurably warmer on a thermal scan. This is the physiological basis of what thermography captures: not a diagnosis of any specific condition, but a visible marker of change in the body's function that may be worth discussing further with your physician.
